Top 5 Sewing Tips For Beginners
If you are a beginner sewer and want to learn how to start sewing the most beautiful garments, then we have put together some of the top tips and techniques for beginner sewists to help you to gain the confidence.
Cutting a pattern and transferring pattern marks.
Knowing how to cut out and prepare your fabric and pattern is the beginning of a successful sewing project. Even the tiniest mistakes can lead to some of the biggest errors so make sure you pay attention to every single detail. Marks can be transferred may making a small clip in the seam allowance or simply just using a little bit of chalk – a tracing wheel and carbon paper can also do the trick on some lightly coloured fabrics.
Sew with a small magnet next to you, then when you drop or lose a needle or pins, wave it around the area until it finds them. No more painful episodes with lost needles on the floor!
3. Start by hand
To be sure everything is perfect while you start, always do the first 1-2 stitches turning your hand wheel anticlockwise, so you can check if the needle is getting smoothly in the fabric. As well as this, you will also be able to see if your fabric’s thickness is going to become an issue and you will also be able to avoid any thread jams.
4. Tape Guide for Top Stitching
Make your life super easy and sew perfectly straight top stitching on fabric without marking it by putting masking tape along the fabric to provide a perfectly straight line to follow. All you will need to do is to just stitch along the edge of the tape, and remove the tape when you are finished. Tah-da!
Keep your sewing scissors for fabric only as using them on paper will blunt the scissors. If this is a bit too late for you, you can easily sharpen them, by simply taking a piece of silver foil, folding into strips as if you are making a fan and cut up the strips of the foil.
