If you liked Surf’s Up, you’re probably going to be a big fan of a very cool animated film that is being released this month. Rock Dog is a story about a guard dog who really just wants to be a rock star.
The Rock Dog Cast Rocks…
Recognise some of those voices..? That’s not surprising – there are some big names attached to this ambitious project…
It’s got Eddie Izzard – you know, the British comedian who wears lipstick and kick-ass heels and has us in stitches with his sometimes surreal comedy. Here he seems to be channeling Bill Nigh and Russell Brand as the manager/mentor guy.
Angus Scattergood, a British cat and rock legend
Luke Wilson – you know, from being Owen Wilson’s brother and Legally Blonde and The Royal Tenenbaums.
Bodi, a young Tibetan Mastiff with dreams of being a rock star
Kenan Thompson – you know, from Kenan & Kel and member of the hilarious Saturday Night Live cast.
Riff, a henchman in the wolf pack
Matt Dillon – you know, from There’s Something About Mary and Wild Things.
Trey, the snow leopard
Jorge Garcia – you know, Hurley from Lost!
Germur, a goat and a drummer
J K Simmons – you know, from Juno, Spiderman, Law & Order, Kung Fu Panda..
Khampa, Bodi’s dad
Lewis Black – you know, the US comedian (best known at the moment for some serious stingers on chat shows about Donald Trump – but we’ll leave it there, we don’t want to get political!)
Linnux, CEO of Linnux Industries and alpha male wolf
Mae Whitman – you know, the cute little girl from One Fine Day (1996) all grown up!
Darma, bass guitar playing fox
Sam Elliott – you know, him with the big booming voice from Mask, The Big Lebowski and Tombstone. Oscar winner.
Fleetwood Yak (get it?) an elder with many tales to tell
Something A Bit Different
It’s not Disney Pixar. And as much as we love Disney and Pixar – it’s been the creator of some of the best kids films ever made – it will be refreshing to see something from someone else for once! It’s the most expensive Chinese-financed animated production, costing $60m.
Director from Toy Story
Ash Brannon was at the helm of this film, having already won our hearts co-directing Toy Story 2.
They Had To Fight To Make It
In China, generally speaking, it’s difficult to get funding for animations as they are seen as children-only films.
“We were able to persuade those great animators to work for this film because they liked the film’s story,” said Zheng Jun, producer, “Those people used to play music or band themselves.”
But the battle for the film continued after production wrapped up, as the local promotion, including promotional tours to theaters around the country, kicked in, and its intensity was “eye-opening”, Mr. Zheng said.
Over on Rotten Tomatoes, 81% of people want to see the film. Screencrush noted the “cast is pretty stacked”. Slashfilm.com said “Rock Dog looks aggressively fine”.
Will you be going to see this film? Feel free to leave a review!
